UWA Language Science Group
Homo loquens. That is not what our species is called, but it would not be an inappropriate label. For the faculty of language is perhaps our most distinctive attribute, without which human cultures and economies could not have developed, without which there could be no science and no religion. It is then not surprising that language is at least a part of the domain of so many academic disciplines: anthropology, evolutionary biology, computer science, education, linguistics, language and literary studies, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, ...
The Language Science group at UWA consists of people who come from a number of different disciplinary interests and departments but who have teaching and research interests in the area broadly defined to include cognitive, physical and social aspects of language, Language Science. Our overall goals are to bring together scholars of human language from different disciplines with the aim of promoting productive dialogue amongst them, and to build greater co-operation across the various departments and individuals concerned at UWA.
Our specific goals are:
- encouraging cross-disciplinary interest in research in the various departments
- extending co-operation in teaching and supervision
- promoting joint research activities
- promotion of existing courses in Language Science areas to students
- general promotion of Language Science within UWA and externally
ActivitiesIn pursuit of the above goals, the Language Science group is undertaking the following activities:
